Different Uses for Old Refrigerators

No matter how good a refrigeration unit is, eventually they will need to be replaced by a new one and this means the old ones are usually thrown out to the curb. However, you don't always have to throw them away, instead consider taking that old refrigerator and using it for something else around the house. Finally, you might consider it to use to store your laundry items in. Make sure you lay the unit on it's back and the use the shelves to make three even sections in it. Take out the drawers so you have more room. The different sections you create can be used to sort you dirty laundry and the spaces where the drawers once were can be used to store your detergent and fabric softener.

Good Foods for Camping that Require No Refrigeration

If you love to go camping you know that food is an important part of your trip, you also know that if you are tent camping especially that refrigeration is limited to usually a cooler with ice. This is fine if you plan on camping just for a couple of days. However, if you are camping for a longer period of time you need to have some good food choices that won't spoil.

When you go camping, canned and pre-packaged foods are simply a must to have. Canned and packaged items such as baked beans, salsa, heat and serve noodles, dry cereal, chips, granola bars, bread, peanut butter, trail mix and of course beef jerky should all be on your list to take with you.

Make sure that the items you take are versatile and can be mixed and matched with other items to make more variety. An example would be to bring tortilla chips and salsa or bring canned marinara sauce with noodles. Also, make sure to bring along condiments like mustard, mayonnaise, butter and some spices like salt and pepper and other ones you enjoy flavoring your food with. Spices are lightweight and they help the flavor of your food immensely.

You also will want to bring along instant foods that can be made by simply adding water to them. These are ideal for camping. For instance instant oatmeal combined with some nuts like almonds or some dried fruit will make a very healthy and filling breakfast and will keep you going all day long.

When you go camping don't forget your fruits and vegetables. Not everything that doesn't need refrigeration has to be in a box or a can. You don't want all your food filled with preservatives. There are plenty of fruits and vegetables that don't need refrigeration. For instance stock up on apples, tomatoes, oranges, bananas, and pears. All of these handle quite well in the great outdoors. Make sure to also add potatoes, carrots and onions to the mix. This way you can make a nice vegetable stew as a meal.

Another thing to consider would be to bring a long a baking mix like Bisquick. This is great for making pancakes and biscuits to have as a meal or to go along with a meal. You also might want to bring some corn bread mix as well. You can cook these over an open flame too.

Always make sure that you bring along some protein when you go camping. You need this to keep up your energy for when you go out hiking or climbing during your camping trip. The hard meats like summer sausage or salami do quite well without refrigeration and are great to eat alone as a snack or use in a meal. You can also bring along canned tuna or chicken because neither one of these need any kind of refrigeration.

Finally, make sure to bring plenty of water which of course does not need refrigeration to stay good. If you want to keep it cool, just make sure it's kept in the shade or if you are near a stream, keep it in the water to cool it.

If you own a swamp cooler as your refrigeration unit to keep your home nice and cool during those hot summer months, the ideal thing you want to be able to do is to simply turn it on and then sit back and let it pump out the cool air all day. Most often this is exactly what happens and life goes on nice and cool during the summer. However, there is one thing that you need to remember is that it is pretty hard to recognize when your swamp cooler is not running as efficiently as it should be. Even if you turn it on and it starts cooling your home right away, you still don't know if it's working way too hard to get the job done.

You might want to think of your swamp cooler as you would your car. It has a motor and it takes certain energy to run it, just like your car. Well these units also need regular maintenance in order to continue to run efficiently. Below are a few things to consider when it comes to the efficiency of the cooler.

If you want it to run efficiently you should try to wait for the temperature to reach at least 85 degrees F. This is going to save you up to 50 percent water usage. How Do Propane Refrigerators Work?

First off, what is a propane refrigerator? It is actually a closed system refrigerator and it operates basically on the same principles as your standard electric refrigerator that you have in your home kitchen. But the difference is that it doesn't use a pump that is electrically powered to drive the cooling agents through the pipes inside of the casing of the fridge. Instead, this kind of refrigerator takes propane and uses the application of heat through a modified series of different pressurized chambers to end up with the same results as your home unit. It is also known as an absorption refrigerator. You will most generally find these types of refrigerators in different recreational vehicles. They are extremely portable and they have several different miniaturized versions of the typical design and some that can even be used for outdoor picnics and other outdoor get togethers.

The internal workings of a propane refrigerator is composed mainly of a series of different pressurized pipes that run through the casing of the unit with five different primary components that are found interspersed through the unit. The components are the separator, condenser, evaporator along with the absorber. These are connected in line with each other and they all perform their own separate duties that are vital for the refrigerator to keep low temperatures inside of the fridge.

The refrigerator actually has a either a propane or a gas burner that is actually connected to it, just below the generator. This burner will heat the generator. Then inside the generator is a combination of water along with ammonia and these two begin to boil. Once this solution begins to boil it will pass down a pipe to the component called the separator and recognizing the difference in the water and the ammonia's molecular weights, it will then separate the two different materials. The ammonia will rise up in the form of a gas and the water won't. Because of this, the water then will head to the absorber and wait for its later use and the ammonia will travel to the condenser. This condenser is called an expansive device and it will allow for the ammonia's heat to disappear and then the ammonia will be condensed back down into liquid form.

The ammonia will next be sent to the evaporator and it will then mix with some compressed hydrogen gas and will evaporate one more time into a frozen vapor. This vapor is then pumped through the coils for cooling inside of the propane refrigerator. This is a result of the pressure that was first created by the generator. The generator is the main driving force for the entire process of cooling. After the vapor has passed through the cooling coils, it will then go to the absorber and this will then make it combine with the water again.

There is a chemical reaction that will take place when the ammonia comes back and combines with the water again. The hydrogen will then travel back up a pipe and into the evaporator and will wait to repeat the cycle. The ammonia and the water will again flow back together back into the generator to wait for the cycle to start all over again as well.

What is Magnetic Refrigeration?

Magnetic refrigeration is not something that has just been discovered or thought up. It actually was first observed by German physicist Emil Warburg back in 1880 and the very first fundamental principle of it was noted by Debye in 1926 and the following year by Giauque. One of the first working magnetic refrigeration systems was actually built back in 1933. In fact it was the very first method of finding a way to cool below 0.3 K.

So what is magnetic refrigeration? It is a phenomenon where there is a reversible change in a temperature of a material that is caused by exposing it to a changing magnetic field. It's known to physicists as adiabatic demagnetization because it's an application that is specifically created for a drastic temperature drop. What it does, is allow the magnetic domain of a particular material to become what is known as disoriented from the magnetic field by agitating the thermal energy or phonons that are in the material. If it is isolated and no energy is allowed to migrate into the material during all of this, the temperature will drop as the domain absorbs the thermal energy during it's reorientation.

One of the best examples of this effect is the chemical element of gadolinium and its alloys. It has been observed that the temperature of gadolinium will increase when it enters into certain magnetic fields. When it leaves these fields its temperature will drop.

When techniques are applied to refrigeration systems, a strong magnetic field will be applied to a refrigerant, this will force different magnetic dipoles or circulation of electric currents, in the refrigerant to go into a lowered state of entropy or thermodynamic property. The stronger the magnetic field might be, the more aligned the dipoles are going to be. If they keep the refrigerant at a constant temperature through this thermal contact with a heat sink while they switch on the magnetic field, the refrigerant will some of it's energy. When it is turned off the heat capacity of this refrigerant will rise again and this insulates the system with a magnetic field. When this happens, the temperature of the refrigerant will be decreased.

There have been a few materials that have been discovered that can create magnetic refrigeration, however, gadolinium and some of its alloys are probably the best materials that are available for being able to create refrigeration systems that can keep things near room temperature when needed. At this point in time though, these types of refrigeration systems are not yet proven to be viable, but when they are, the possibilities are great. Once confirmed viable, magnetic refrigeration could be used for cooling systems, heating systems and even used in power generation. Even appliances might be able to use this as refrigeration systems and would have a much smaller impact on the environment, however, there are still some technical and efficiency points that still need to be analyzed further before this type of refrigeration should be considered in using in wide use refrigeration systems.

What is Ice Harvesting and It's History?

Most of us today when we think of snow and ice we think of fun things like ice skating, sledding, skiing and a variety of other different winter related activities. However, it wasn't really all that long ago that ice was very important and was considered an agricultural product that was gathered up in the form of ice harvesting used for domestic and commercial refrigeration. This ice harvesting took place during the months of January and February.

Even back in the day before commercial refrigeration and domestic refrigeration existed as we know it, ice was used for drinks, making ice cream and keeping food from going bad. Even some of the founding fathers of the United States such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson had their own ice houses.

Ice during the 18th century though was normally limited just to the wealthy because it was a difficult and expensive thing to do and to keep the ice since it was an expensive venture to build an ice house. However, things began to change in the 19th century when harvesting ice grew into a big business, especially in New England. It was the birth of the American commercial refrigeration ice industry that began back in 1805 that changed it. It was Frederick Tudor, who was a merchant from Boston, that created the first commercial natural ice business in the US. He made a fortune shipping ice all around the world to places like Charleston, New Orleans, Calcutta, Cuba, China, England and South America.

It was Tudor's foreman, Nathaniel Jarvis Wyeth that came up with many different specialized tools for the ice harvesting such as plows and different saws that helped to improve how the ice for commercial refrigeration was harvested. The ice would be harvested in the winter months and then stored in big ice houses that allowed for distribution of ice all year round.

There were special ice trains that eventually were created for commercial refrigeration and this meant that during the summer months, these special trains would carry the ice to it's various destinations. On an average day, fifty cars would leave their operations in Milton, New Hampshire to deliver ice to their customers. It was in 1880, that Wakefield, New Hampshire started doing the same thing and they opened up what was called the Independent and Driver's Union Ice commercial refrigeration companies.

In the 1800s in the Boston area, it was said that they harvested over 600,000 tons of ice and that there were 381,000 tons of ice that was sold as well as consumed. In the United States alone, it was said that they used over 5,000,000 tons of ice each year and by 1900 they were using over 10,000,000 tons each year.

It was during this time that commercial refrigeration companies supplied mainly to places like restaurants, dairies, breweries, markets and meat packing plants as well as hospitals that needed to have ice all year round to make sure special medications and blood were kept at an even temperature year round.

In the mid 1800s, the ice harvesting not only supplied commercial refrigeration but it began to trickle into the average persons home where they would have ice boxes to store the ice in their own homes. This ice box had ice placed on top of the box and then air would circulate around it. This led to a lot of different companies capitalizing on this and in the late 1800s they began to manufacture more and more of these ice boxes, which would later be known as refrigerators.

What is a Reach In Stainless Steel Refrigerator?

Reach in refrigerators can be found in a variety of different industries and have the storage capacity of at least 15 cubic feet or more. Often they are found as a stainless steel refrigerator and will be used for storing things that are perishable, especially food. They are generally found in restaurants but can also be found at medical facilities so they can store biologicals like serums and medical supplies that need to be kept at temperatures between 30 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit. The most common sizes you will see will be 15 to 85 cubic feet.

Most commonly it's the stainless steel refrigerator finish that you will find but you can find aluminum or vinyl finishes as well. All the interiors generally have one of two different finishes and that would be metal or plastic. The insulation for these units are either a batten type of polystyrene or urethane. This type of refrigerator is usually a self contained unit and has an air cooled condenser. Some larger units will come with a remote condenser or water cooled condenser.

The typical self contained unit has the evaporator mounted on the center of the upper part of where the food compartment is. When it operates, the warm air is taken up by the fan into the upper section of the cooler of the unit. Then it passover over the evaporator coils, is cooled down and then it goes out of the bottom of the cooler. The air will then pass through the inside and around all of the items that are in the unit.

The stainless steel refrigerator and other reach ins have their low pressure control set to operate the evaporator on a self defrosting type of cycle and this makes the temperature control led. There is another kind of control and it uses both the temperature and the low pressure control or defrost on each of it's cycles. The fan of the evaporator is wired so that it is in continuous operation inside the cabinet.

Most often, the evaporators in a reach in refrigerator whether it's a stainless steel refrigerator or not, are usually the unit cooler type with some dry coils. In smaller units, there are ice making coils, these are similar to the ones used in your domestic style refrigerators and they can work just as well as the straight gravity style coils. In these smaller units, R-12 and R-502 will normally be used as a coolant.

There are many different suppliers that offer both new and used reach in stainless steel, aluminum or vinyl finish refrigeration units in a variety of different capacities. It of course depends upon what the needs are of your company on what kind of unit that you will invest in. But with the variety of different ones to pick from and the variety of different companies out there selling them, you shouldn't have an issue finding one.

Once you have found the stainless steel refrigerator that you need, remember that you will need to make sure that you treat it with care and make sure that you have maintenance done on it and make sure that you contact someone as soon as you think there is something wrong with the unit. This is why it's good to make sure that you have a reliable company on hand in order for you to be able to get service as soon as you need it.

What Exactly is an Ice Maker and How Does it Work?

They're called ice machines or ice makers and they haven't really been around all that long. In fact, it was only a 100 years ago that ice was simply hard to come in most parts of the world. In the hotter areas of the world you would have had to buy the ice from some sort of delivery service. This service would import large blocks from a colder climate or from an industrial refrigeration plant. Because of this, buying ice cost quite a bit back then. However, if they wanted to keep their food fresh and cold they didn't have much choice. In the hottest parts of the world it was common to never see ice in your entire life.

All of this changed in the early part of the 20th century. This is when refrigerators became compact and more affordable and the production of ice was brought into the store on the corner and into the home. In the 1960s life became even easier when the automatic ice maker was introduced. What a thrill for everyone. Today, we take ice for granted.

If you are wonder how an ice maker, in a refrigerator works, first off they all use an electric motor that has an electrically operated water valve as well as an electrical heating unit. So, for the unit to have power to all of the elements, you need to hook the ice maker up to an electric circuit that powers a refrigerator. A water line has to be hooked up from the home to the refrigerator in order to have water to turn into ice. Both the water intake tube and the power line run through the back of the freezer.

After everything is hooked up, this is when the ice maker will start its cycle. This is usually controlled by a very simple electric circuit and then a series of switches. When the cycle begins, there is a timed switch in the circuit that will briefly send a current to a solenoid water valve. Most of the designs the valve will be placed behind the refrigerator and is connected to the central circuit through electrical wires. When the current goes down the wires, this charge will move the solenoid and open the valve.

The valve will only stay open for about seven seconds and this is when it lets the water in to fill up the ice mold. The mold is plastic and has connected cavities. These are usually curved and in a half circle shape. Each cavity wall has a small notch so each cube of ice will be attached to the cube right next to it.

After the mold is filled with water, the machine will wait for the water to freeze. It's the cooling unit in the refrigerator that does the work of freezing the water and not the ice maker. The ice maker has its own built in thermostat and will monitor the temperature level of the water when it's in the molds. When it gets down to a certain temperature, like 9 degrees F, the thermostat will close a switch in the electrical circuit.

When the switch is closed, it will let the current flow through the heating coil under the ice maker. When the coil heats up, it will warm the bottom of the mold and the ice cubes will loosen from the mold. The circuit will activate the ice maker's motor next. The motor will spin a gear and it will rotate another gear that is attached to a plastic shaft. This has ejector blades that stick out from it. When the blades revolve they will scoop the ice up and out of the mold and then push them out the front of the ice maker.

There are some plastic notches in the front of the machine in the housing that will match up with the blades. The blades will go through the notches and the ice cubes then will be pushed out to the collection bin under the ice maker itself. After the cubes drop into the bin, the arm will fall down again. Once the arm reaches the lowest resting point it will throw the switch in the circuit and this will start the water valve again to start another cycle of producing ice.
